Aspirin poisoning, also known as salicylate poisoning , refers to acute or chronic salicylate poisoning, mostly aspirin . [1] The most common symptoms are tinnitus , nausea, abdominal pain, and shortness of breath to compensate for acidosis [1] These symptoms may not be apparent at an early stage, and fever may appear as the dose rises. [1] [4] Complications include cerebral edema , pulmonary edema, epilepsy , hypoglycemia , and may even lead to cardiac arrest. [1]
The most common cause of salicylate poisoning is aspirin poisoning, and other possible reasons are winter oil or salicyclic salicylate. [2] Excessive doses are most likely caused by accidental or deliberate use. [1] A small amount of wintergreen oil is very likely to cause poisoning. [2] The method of diagnosing poisoning is to repeat the blood test to check the concentration of salicylic acid and monitor the pH of arterial blood. [1] Although some people use the nomogram to help diagnose, but does not require routine use. [1] The highest dose of salicylic acid in blood does not last longer than 12 hours. [2]
There are currently many measures to avoid salicylate poisoning: use packages that prevent children from eating infrequently, with fewer grains in each bottle and avoid eating in large quantities. [1]Treatment includes the use of activated carbon , bisphosphonates intravenously mixed with sugar syrup, potassium chloride, and hemodialysis. [2] Giving sugar water can help salicylic acid poisoning even if blood sugar is normal. [2] Hemodialysis is recommended for patients with renal failure, unconsciousness, blood pH values below 7.2, or high blood salicylic acid concentrations. [2] If someone has shortness of breath, consider the possibility of intubation. [1]
The earliest in 1877, the literature has described the phenomenon of salicylic acidosis. [5] In 2004, more than 20,000 cases occurred in the United States, resulting in 43 deaths. [1] Nearly 1% of cases of acute poisoning eventually led to death, while chronic poisoning was even more severe. [3] Older people are more likely to be poisoned than other age groups. [5]
